Working Out at Night

Working out at night has a number of benefits over training in the morning although there are also some important considerations to remember. One of the main reasons why working out at night is so popular is simply because most people spend the majority of their time through the day at the office or performing their job. For this reason training at night is a necessity since training in the morning is simply not an option.

One of the biggest advantages of working out at night or in the afternoon is you allow yourself to build up to your maximum energy level in the evening by eating regularly all day. If you are working out at night you have probably already eaten several times throughout the day and all this food is now available to be used as fuel for your evening training session.

You simply cannot reach your maximum energy level by training in the morning or after breakfast since you only have a limited amount of fuel left in your system from the food you ate the previous day. It takes a couple of hours for food to be used as energy so if you ate breakfast and then went immediately to the gym you would only get a mild benefit from the food you just ate. Working out at night however, you have the advantage of having a huge amount of stored energy at your disposal.

One more thing that is worth mentioning though is that after you have finished training at night your internal body temperature stays elevated for about 4 hours above that of your usual core body temperature. After 4 hours it should be back to around the normal level. The reason this is important is because after you workout and raise your core body temperature it might be difficult to get to sleep until your internal temperature gets back to normal.

Often weight trainers and bodybuilders who like working out at night will be quite tired immediately after finishing their last set in the gym, although once they get home and take a shower, often they get a kind of second wind and they don’t want to go straight to bed after dinner. The increased core body temperature will actually keep you awake for around 4 or maybe even 5 hours after your workout. So if you need to get to bed relatively early and want a good night sleep it might be ideal to make sure you finish your workout giving yourself 4-5 hours before you need to get to sleep.
